Dan presents Times Breakthrough Awards

"Doctor Who has rescued the career of former teenage pop star Billie Piper who was today honoured at an awards ceremony for her successful breakthrough into an acting career.

Piper, who faded from the limelight after her second album in 2000 amid lurid media stories of her rocky marriage to the ginger-haired DJ Chris Evans, was voted the most exciting new face of 2005 by Times readers because of her appearance in the BBC’s revival of the classic science fiction series.

She impressed audiences with her portrayal of Rose, the Doctor’s sidekick, playing alongside Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor in the first and David Tennant in the second series written by Russell T. Davies.

Daniel Radcliffe, the star of the Harry Potter movies, handed Piper her prize - The Times Breakthrough Award - at the South Bank Awards today..." (read full story here)

HPGOF ranks 1st at Rampway Online's Top Ten Movies of 2005

As slow as the movie industry has been lately, you would think that not one single movie made a splash last year. Luckily, for viewers and the film industry alike, that's not true. Here's a quick look at the top ten movies of 2005 and how they faired worldwide at the box office:

10. "Hitch" - "Hitch" opened on February 11 making $43 million in a weekend. This broke the record $39 million opening previously held by Adam Sandler's "50 First Dates." "Hitch," starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes and Kevin James, raked up $179 million here in the US and a total of $368 million worldwide. The movie was received very well by critics and held the highest grossing title for beginning months of 2005.

9. "Batman Begins" - "Batman Begins" opened on June 15 and brought in $48 million in its first three days. The movie starred Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and, of course, Mrs.-Cruise-to-be, Katie Holmes. Though Katie's high profile romance with Cruise grabbed headlines, "Batman Begins" didn't suffer. It topped out with $205 million in the US and $371 million worldwide.

8. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" - Most people had their doubts when it came to the remake of this classic. However, the fabulous Johnny Depp and Tim Burton stepped up to the challenge and got something twice as sweet out of the deal. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" opened July 15 and made a solid $56 million. Most thought it fade off after the great opening, but fans had a sweet-tooth and kept coming back for more. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" made $206 million in the US and $473 million worldwide. Take that skeptics!

7. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" - The movie that sparked all of the controversy of the year, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" opened on June 10 at $50 million. While both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were media favorites, none of their previous movies had been major blockbusters. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" helped to boost both of their careers, earning $186 million at the US box office and $475 million worldwide.

6. "King Kong" - "Lord of the Rings" mega-man, Peter Jackson, can erase that would-be stigma of only being successful at directing one kind of film. Jackson hit gold again. But this time there were no hobbits, orcs or sexy elves; there was a big monkey. "King Kong," starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody, opened on December 14, making $50 million in its opening weekend. Though this was somewhat low compared to the "LOTR" films, the movie continued to bring in numbers and has made $205 million in the US and $500 million worldwide, so far. "Kong" is still in the top ten on the box office charts.

5. "Madagascar" - "Madagascar" is the only animated movie in the top ten. Dreamworks' "Madagascar" opened on May 27 with $47 million. Its mix of funny stars (Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett-Smith) and its catchy "I Like to Move It-Move It!" helped "Madagascar" to rake in $193 million in the US and $527 worldwide, and giving Dreamworks Studios something else to cheer about.

4. "Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" - "Chronicles of Narnia" opened on December 9, bringing in a healthy $65 million. "Narnia," starring Georgie Henley, William Moseley, Skandar Keynes, Tilda Swinton and Anna Popplewell, captivated audiences and has brought in $267 million from the US and more than $588 million worldwide. "Chronicles of Narnia" is currently fifth at the box office.

3. "War of the Worlds" - Yet another remake of an alien movie, "War of the Worlds" invaded theaters on June 29, bringing in $64 million. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, "War of the Worlds" made $234 million in the US and $591 million worldwide, making it the number one sci-fi remake of all time.

2. "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" - George Lucas finally wrapped up the "Star Wars" series and he did it with style. "Revenge of the Sith," starring Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson, opened on May 19 and broke opening weekend records making $108 million. It went on to make $380 million in the US alone, and a world total of $848 million.

1. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" - It was clear that once again Harry Potter had the magic touch. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" opened on November 18, taking in $102 million. "Goblet of Fire," starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, won the holiday showdown between "King Kong" and "Chronicles of Narnia." It added $867 million, including $284 million from the US, to its franchise total, which is now more than $3.5 billion.

Dan's playing as Harry Potter gives great impact to Fantasy Novels

As quoted: "As the Fantasy Market Explodes, Swords and Dragons Are for More Than Just Unconfident Males..."

Less than a decade ago, the words “fantasy novel” quite possibly evoked a mental image of an awkward, adolescent boy leaving greasy fingerprints all over the pages of a book about dungeons and dragons. In recent years, however, the genre has broken free of its confining stereotype, having earned this right, and then some.

Enjoying jumps in sales by 8.5 percent in the past five years, today the genre is treated much more seriously due to its rapid and dramatic rise in popularity. Having a conversation about fantasy novels could veer in the direction of myriad topics, from the ethics of escapism to blockbuster movies, from Freud’s thoughts on wish fulfillment to Daniel Radcliffe and pop culture.

Though fantasy novels have never exactly been unpopular, it was probably hard for their authors to imagine a time when their genre of novel would be so popular as to inspire winding moonlit lines of fans waiting to buy the newest book. That said, fantasy novels have enjoyed a long history and have existed longer than the genre thought to go hand-in-hand with them, science fiction. The earliest fantasy novel worth mentioning, in the sense that we understand it today, is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written an astonishing 141 years ago by Lewis Carroll. Around 30 years later was Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and, at the turn of the century, Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz.

In the 20th century, fantasy novels developed a bit of a cult following and a more specialized audience. Writer Ian McFayden’s satirical yet accurate Web site titled “How to Write a Best Selling Fantasy Novel” advises a potential writer to consider the audience and makes clear the stereotype surrounding fantasy novels: “Remember that the majority of people reading your book will be unconfident males. So make your character a Loser. Aimless, shy, cowardly, guilty, ill, lazy, rural—any of these will do.”

Though this category of reader may still make up the bulk of fantasy novel aficionados, the 21st century has already seen an audience expansion, largely due to the Harry Potter phenomenon, which began in 1998 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Middle school teacher Ann Smith observed, “Prior to the Harry Potter books, it seemed to me that boys tended to like fantasy better, but now girls show as much or more interest in reading fantasy books.”

Books and series like The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, A Wrinkle in Time, The Last Unicorn, A Wizard of Earthsea, Redwall, and Eragon—which was, astonishingly, written by a 15-year-old homeschooled boy from the Midwest—have experienced immense popularity of late, probably helped by the recent Hollywood blockbusters based on them. Especially for younger kids, these movies have a positive effect: “I think that young people have wonderful imaginations that are sparked by the special effects of today’s amazing technology. Therefore, they can easily visualize the characters and plots of fantasy novels,” says Smith.

Though each novel, of course, has its own characters, message, and style, many plot elements overlap in fantasy works. McFayden’s Web site lists the main elements to include: “Create a Character, Create a Quest, Create a Motley Bunch of Companions, Create a Wise but Useless Guide, Create the Land, Create an Enemy, Make it Long, Lead up to a Cataclysmic Battle.” Though these guidelines are oversimplified, any fantasy novel you know and will likely include most of those elements.

Merriam-Webster calls fantasy “the creative imagination, unrestricted by reality.” Fantasy novels allow us to do just that: drop the restrictions and connections with reality and escape to not only another set of people and friends, but a whole other world where our worries and routine don’t exist.

On this subject, an anonymous fantasy novel enthusiast and writer on a fantasy message board writes, “When I was a kid, I wasn’t popular. It was occasionally hellish. I escaped into worlds where I could do anything I wanted. If I wanted to call a dragon and fly away on it, I could do that. If I wanted to be an elvish princess in disguise, I could do that. Now, it can be hard to admit that when you grow up, that you need to escape reality now and then, but I think the world is a scary and out-of-control place and sometimes that gets to people.”

As long as the world remains a scary and out-of-control place—and it currently shows no sign of ceasing to be so—fantasy will continue to reign in the hearts and minds of its faithful followers.

The Harry Potter 6-Discs Box Set

OVERVIEW

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
American director Chris Columbus brings the magic of British author J.K. Rowling's beloved best-selling fantasy novel to life in Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone. Eleven-year-old orphan Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) finds his world turned upside down when he discovers that, like his deceased parents, he is a wizard and has been accepted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. With fellow first-year students Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) by his side, Harry's adventures begin in the rambling castle that is Hogwarts. Vivid special effects make Hogwarts' magic a reality with paintings that come alive, staircases that move themselves, friendly ghosts, and fast-paced Quidditch (the school sport) matches in which students zoom around on their flying brooms. Mixed in with the miracles of Hogwarts are its dark hidden chambers and secrets, which Harry and his friends encounter as they embark on a quest to keep a treasured powerful object from falling into the wrong hands. Staying true to the book with this film adaptation, Columbus follows Rowling's story to the tiniest detail, making it a special treat for readers who were smitten with the novel. Radcliffe is especially engaging as Harry, infusing him with a believable sense of wonderment. The star-studded cast also includes Richard Harris, Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman, and Robbie Coltrane.

Harry Potter 2 Chamber Of Secrets
Director Chris Columbus recreates the magic of the second book from author J.K. Rowling's best-selling series about a young wizard, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe). In this sequel, Harry and his friends Hermione Granger (Emma Watson) and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) return to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the new school year only to be met with a terrifying mystery. An unknown creature, one that supposedly lives in the legendary Chamber of Secrets hidden at Hogwarts, is attacking students in the school, leaving them literally petrified and as cold as stone. Even the professors seem at a loss for how to solve the chilling mystery, leaving it up to Harry and his friends to save the day. Rowling's story translates well to the big screen, with a magical flying car, a giant spider, a house elf named Dobby, and assorted other creatures making their film debuts. Radcliffe continues to charm as the wide-eyed young Potter, and Grint shines as his best friend and sidekick. Kenneth Branagh joins the all-star cast as the preening megalomaniac author and professor, Gilderoy Lockhart. Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets also stars the late Richard Harris, majestic Maggie Smith, and an under used Alan Rickman.

Harry Potter 3 The Prisoner Of Azkaban
In this adaptation of the third book in J.K. Rowling's best-selling series, Harry Potter (Danielle Radcliffe) and his best friends Hermoine (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint), must face the dangerous convict Sirius Black (Gary Oldman), who has ties with their enemy Lord Voldemort. The spectacular fantasy-adventure action of the earlier movies (Sorcerer's Stone and Chamber Of Secrets) is once again presented here, as Alfonso Cuaron lends his unique directorial style to recreating Rowling's magical story on celluloid. A scarier, darker story than the first two, this one concerns the mystery behind why Sirius Black is tracking Harry Potter. Slowly Harry and his friends unravel the clues, and learn secrets about Harry's parents that had all along been hidden from him. Meanwhile, because the deranged Sirius poses a threat to all students at Hogwarts, the school enlists a group of daunting black ghosts called Dementors to stand guard. These flying ghouls have a powerful effect on Harry and frighten him to his core. Yet even these chilling obstacles don't dampen the spirits of the youthful wizards, who meet Buckbeak a giant flying hawk-horse creature, welcome a new dark arts teacher (David Thewlis) and a new divination teacher (Emma Thompson), and are still determined to beat the rival Slytherin team in Quidditch. Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban offers a visually stunning interpretation of the revered book, and will thrill viewers with its special effects, it's penetrating John Williams score, and its superb performances.

Capsule reviews of current movies: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

"...HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE. The fourth "Harry Potter" movie revolves around fierce contests and frightful endurance tests. Think "Harry Potter, Fear Factor" and you're on the right track. The movie's ceaseless trials unfold against a backdrop of adolescent yearning as Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his pals (Rupert Grint and Emma Watson) inch toward maturity. This edition, directed by Mike Newell, consists mostly of action-oriented set pieces, some spectacular. The plot advances the Potter saga by having Harry compete in the Triwizard Tournament, which ultimately brings him face-to-face with the evil Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Among notable additions: Veteran actor Brendan Gleeson arrives on the scene to play professor Alastor "Mad-Eye" Moody. If the movie sometimes loses momentum, it contains enough grand sights and magical mayhem to stir even skeptical imaginations."

Rated: PG-13: Scenes that may frighten younger children.

Dan quotes: Care to memorize them?

You might have heard your friends said these lines. You might be good yourself on putting in mind Daniel's quotes from TV guesting, interviews on premiere or pre- or post-production on films, anywhere... In short, you must be crazy about Dan. So, BTBE is so glad to present to you (his dedicated fans) some of his quotes from www.imdb.com

  • After being cast as Harry Potter: "I think I'm a tiny bit like Harry 'cos I'd like to have an owl. Yeah, that's the tiny bit, actually."
  • "I don't know. People tell me I look mournful. They say, "Cheer up, Dan, it's not that bad!" Sometimes I just look into space, which freaks people out. If I was ever required to do anything other than look haunted, I could. I'm a happy person. Though I don't, like, dot my "I's" with hearts or anything - that would be too happy."
  • "I'm not much of a cake person."
  • "But I don't think it's going to happen. I don't think I'll do all of them - I'll probably get too spotty or too tall or I'll shrink or something."
  • "Absolutely. 100 percent." [on believing in magic]
  • "I was in the bath at the time, and my dad came running in and said, 'Guess who they want to play Harry Potter!?' and I started to cry. It was probably the best moment of my life."
  • "I'm not clumsy, I'm just accident prone."
  • Upon seeing the movie: "I'm a bit nervous about whether people will like it, but I've seen it, and I'm sure they will. It's really good - it's quite scary, it's quite emotional. Even I cried and I don't cry easily! I cried at the end credits when my name came up, and I was, like, Oh my God! I can't believe that's my name! I've met so many people since we started filming and it's been wonderful. I've progressed so far and changed so much since the beginning. It's been like a real journey."
  • On considering himself as a heartthrob: "Personally I can't see it, but if other people can, fine. Cool!"
  • "I would consider doing any part as long as the script is good and the film has an interesting director."
  • "I like them, but it's hard to concentrate when the bats fly about, and they pee while they fly." [about the bats on the set]
  • "I've never been one of the cool people at school, but then again, I don't get the people who are cool. It's not that I don't like them, it's just that they don't interest me."
  • "Too many little numbers on one page!" - about math
  • "Stage is much more intimidating than going before the cameras, because you can really screw up, and can't do a retake."
  • "When I go back to school everyone asks a lot of questions. Then, after about a week, when I've answered everything, we get back to normal."
  • "It's too far down the road to decide about a fifth movie. I'm still the same age Harry is, and I haven't actually grown that much."
  • "Fans are really important for me. And if they take pains to write me, it's the minimum that I answer myself."
  • "I think I'm highly normal. I'm attending school after acting, I'm going out with friends, going to the cinema - I'm just doing everything a normal teenager does. People think I can't leave the house without being in a crowd of fans - but that's not true. I'm able to do more things than people might think."
  • "I'm thrilled of the acceptance I get abroad. The people are so hearty, warm and grateful and I feel privileged having seen so many countries and some of the greatest monuments."
  • "When I get into trouble at school I'd like to take an invisibility cloak, drape it over me and sneak out the door. Or I'd like to have a 3 headed-dog because then no one would argue with me"
  • "I played a trick on the make-up department where I put a fake blood capsule in my mouth, pretended to trip on the stairs and let the blood come out of my mouth. They really fell for it, then they chased after me with a water pistol."
  • "Everyone on the set has a mobile phone, and I found by pushing a few buttons, they could be programmed into different languages. I fixed Robbie's (Coltrane) to speak in Turkish."
  • "I don't understand girls, but I'm slowly learning."
  • [on saying that he'll do all of the Harry Potter movies] "Ultimately it comes down to whether we're still enjoying it. If we are then I think we would be sort of stupid not to do them. As long as I'm doing other stuff around the same time, I think it'll be fine. Also, I sort of try to read the books when they come out impartially and not make up my mind, but the fact is when I was reading the sixth, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, there were bits in there where I was going, 'God, I would love to do that because it's so good.'"

Early career

Radcliffe was born in Fulham, London, the only child of Alan Radcliffe (a literary agent) and Marcia Gresham (a casting agent, who was involved in several films for the BBC). Radcliffe's parents discouraged him from show business when, at age five, he expressed desire in acting. However, they changed their minds; in December, 1999, he made his first on-screen appearance as the title character in the BBC's televised version of the Dickens novel David Copperfield.

Career

In 2000, Radcliffe was selected to star as the wizard Harry Potter in a big-budget version of the popular book series by J.K. Rowling, after auditions involving thousands of applicants. Radcliffe's first theatrical film appearance was in 2001, a small supporting role in The Tailor of Panama. His first starring role as Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), was released later that year and became a large financial success. It was in fact, at the time, the second highest grossing movie of all time.

In 2002, Radcliffe reprised his role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (his co-star was Kenneth Branagh, who that same year directed the stage production, The Play What I Wrote, in which Radcliffe made an appearance). In 2004 and 2005, Radcliffe returned to the Potter franchise in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The films continued to produce high box office results and were considered successful worldwide.

Radcliffe is currently filming the independent Australian film, December Boys. He is slated to appear in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, currently scheduled for release in 2007.

Personal life

Radcliffe, who prefers to be called "Dan" and was taught at the esteemed Sussex House School, Knightsbridge, is currently educated at the all-boys public City of London School. He has two dogs, named Binka and Nugget.

He plays bass guitar and is a guitar-rock music fan, admiring several bands including The Beatles, The Clash, The Libertines, The Strokes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Sex Pistols and the Pixies. He also enjoys Bloc Party, R.E.M., U2 and Stereophonics. As well as being a fan of Fulham Football Club, Daniel was a follower of the World Wrestling Entertainment league of wrestling and Formula One Racing.

Radcliffe has also been a supporter of various charities. Fans have repeatedly donated to organizations on his request, including the Demelza House Charity, in lieu of sending him birthday presents.

Wealth

Radcliffe's personal fortune has now exceeded GB £23 million making him the richest teenager in the United Kingdom (read other article here)

High price of Dan's education

The teenage stars of the latest 'Harry Potter' movie will cost Warner Bros $3.6-million when they stop filming the new movie for a month to take school exams.

Daniel Radcliffe (17) and Emma Watson, soon to be 16, must sit Advanced Supplementary (AS) Levels and General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams respectively this summer, halting the progress of the fifth movie, 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' by a month.

A source said: "Not everyone is going to be paid but Warner Bros are having to factor in an extra £2-million into the budget to pay for studio hire and offices."

Radcliffe, who plays Harry in JK Rowling's blockbuster series, is studying English literature, history, religion and philosophy, while co-star Watson, better known as Hermione Granger, will sit exams for standard subjects including English, maths and science.

The Harry Potter trio... so far...

Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, 16, has amassed a £23million fortune from the films and is often recognised in public. He says he has grown up faster than other children his age because of the amount of time he has spent working with adults.

Rupert Grint was cast as Ron Weasley after writing his own audition rap. The 17-year-old has earned £5million from the franchise and lives with his mother Jo and father Nigel in Hertfordshire. He is planning to buy his dream car - a £54,000 Range Rover.

Emma Watson only auditioned as a joke when the casting crew came to her Oxford school. The 15-year-old has also made £5million, which is invested in trust for her until she is 21. Watson admits she has a personal stylist and a taste for designer outfits.

Dan Shares His Scares for Friday 13th!

ANAHEIM, Calif., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Fears, phobias and superstitions
are the topic of the day every Friday the 13th and this Friday the 13th is no exception. As part of the upcoming opening of its newest attraction, "Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue," Disneyland Resort in southern California announced today results from its national "What Scares You?" survey conducted by Harris Interactive. When Disneyland asked some of today's hottest celebrities "What Scares You?" they were surprised to learn that "Harry Potter" himself, Daniel Radcliffe, fears clowns while Jennifer Love Hewitt and Serena Williams are still afraid of monsters under their bed! The national survey revealed that 56 percent of American adults admit they fear, or have feared monsters.

The Disneyland "What Scares You?" survey polled top celebrities, more than 4,000 adults (aged 18+) and 1,600 youth (aged 8 to 17) across the United States to gauge their biggest fears.

"Scared, Potter!"

Daniel Radcliffe plays Harry Potter on the HP sequel,
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Looking scared and exhausted fighting against and hiding from the basilisk.

Daniel Radcliffe may not scare easily as Harry Potter or in real life but when it comes to clowns, forget it. The star of "Harry Potter" series says "scary" noises also give him the spooks!

Daniel Radcliffe as the Boy Wizard, Harry Potter

"I was in the bath," answered young Daniel Radcliffe, then 12-years-old, "and I just cried," during an interview at the premiere night of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone to other countries), when he found out he bagged the world's most famous movie role.

Indeed, who would not cry when you found out, a young down-to-earth lad would be playing the famous boy wizard Harry Potter. Inspired by the original novels of J. K. Rowling, Daniel Jacob Radcliffe turned successful, now on the title role on four Harry Potter movies (recently, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire released 18th November 2005), and Harry Potter fans crowded the streets all over the world to have Dan signed the autographs, picture taking, or lucky, shake hands with him.

Rupert Grint (left) and Emma Watson (right) during the HPCOS Premiere

Daniel started the Harry Potter role at the age of 11, and now, at the rightful age of 16, he continues to inspire Harry Potter book fans in making Harry Potter to life. Under three directors now, Daniel and his co-stars (Emma Watson as Hermione Granger and Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley) matured regarding their acting skills and behavior.

Other co-stars Robbie Coltrane (plays Rubeus Hagrid) and Gary Oldman (as Sirius Black) stated that the three actors (Radcliffe, Watson and Grint) put concentration on their roles, unlike before on their childish actions (and turning Coltrane's phone to Turkish) was way too far into consideration that they have grown. Filming together for four movies, they have been together to places, to meeting new people, and to meeting old friends at the set, and looking back, all Harry Potter movies are phenomenon.

Radcliffe had mentioned on a TV guesting interview that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix will start filming on February 2006! So, it's a must-wait for us fans. *wink, wink*
