"Dear Jenna

As I have now finished on HP5 and am about to take a break, I wanted you to have a copy of my new fan mail photo which will be sent out with a new newsletter from the beginning of next year. It was taken by Emma Hardy who took my photo for the exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery.

As Christmas approaches, I would again urge my loyal fans not to send me presents but make a donation to Demelza House (which always needs support).

It has been a very exciting year for me. I had a great time making 'Order of the Phoenix' and working again with Gary OIdman, and for the first time Imelda Staunton, was simply fantastic. David Yates was an inspired director who I would walk on hot coals to work with again.

As many of you know I am going on stage next year, to appear in Equus and the letters of support I have received since the announcment, from many fans have been very exciting to read. Thank you for your words of encouragement.

Later next year I will film MY BOY JACK and again am completely thrilled to be working on this fantastic and very moving script. It is going to be a very full year and I will relish every moment.

Thank you Jenna for your honest and straightforward reporting of events this year - leaving the speculation to others. Thank you also for not jumping on the slightest bit of news and reporting it as fact before having it confirmed. I appreciate everything you do and know I can rely on you to present the truth to my fans without sensationalism - that is why we continue to enjoy working with you.

David Pugh Talks About Daniel in Equus

In the article, he mentioned how he had been wanting to do a production of Equus for eight years but the problem has always been finding the right boy. But when Daniel agreed to a private performance for the playwright, they "couldn't take their eyes off him".

Dan is the youngest, non-royal, "insipiring young Briton" under the age of 21 to be featured. Dan attended the gala opening, HP co-star Robert Pattinson was also in attendance. Dan confronts Q&As about being famous, the 5th Potter movie and growing up

Harry Potter actor, himself, Daniel Radcliffe, took a break in between filming the 5th instalment of the Potter movie, to an interview with NEWSWEEK. He [Dan] dealt with questions like dating, friendship, acting, growing up as Harry Potter (which is obviously his prominent movie role since the age of 11) and his playing a new role, which is quite a bit push ahead of being the boy wizard.

Radcliffe, now, 17, decided to grab another title role of a Tony-awarded play, "Equus." Not only that it [Equus] marked stunning critics during the 70s, Daniel plays on-stage as Alan Strang, who, controversially requires him to ride naked on a horse.

Daily Mail discusses 'Equus' stage play

Daily Mail is reporting that Dan's stage debut 'Equus' will be performed in the round for 16 weeks at the Gielgud Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, with previews starting on February 16 and an official opening night planned for February 27.

Sixty people from the audience will actually be seated on stage when the Harry Potter star, in his role as the troubled groomsman Alan Strang in Peter Shaffer's celebrated play Equus. Tickets will not go on sale at the Gielgud for a while.

In any case, Equus will open after Frost/Nixon, which is being transferred from the Donmar Warehouse Theatre, completes a limited run.

French Magazine "Sud Pep's" has an interesting report on the set of OotP.

Daniel Radcliffe: he's only five foot three. Unlike his schoolmates, the hero didn't have any free time for us. We had to wait until the evening, when the shooting stopped, to get to talk with him.

Daniel Radcliffe, sitting on a mound, has just learned that one of his loved ones is dead. The wind blowing in his hear, tears flow out of his eyes. The scene is heartrending... (a reliable source has informed Mugglenet that Dan listened to depressing music for several days to prepare himself emotionally for this and for a number of other scenes.) but shot indoors, in an annex to the studio which looks like a bunker! It hardly matters: on the big screen, it will seem 100% real!

Blogcritics has some nice comments about Dan and his co-stars regarding their appearance on Ricky Gervais' 'Extras'.

Probably the best episode so far this season, and there’s little doubt in my mind that it’s because the show returns to the same kind of format as the original series. The episode's finest moment features Radcliffe, a cond**, and Dame Diana Rigg who shows what real star power is all about.

Dan Featured in "Exceptional Youth"

The Guardian, a newspaper in the UK, reports that Dan is one of the "inspiring young Britons" to be featured in "Exceptional Youth: Photographs By Emma Hardy Exhibition" at the National Portrait Gallery, London WC2 on October 30th, this year. The article entitled The Young Ones includes interviews from Daniel and the other faces of Britain's future.

Chosen at 11 to play Harry Potter, he is now making the fifth film in the series. He has appeared as 'himself' in Extras and next year is to star in the ITV drama My Boy Jack, in the film December Boys and on stage in Equus.

"I'm still not really aware of how big Harry Potter is. When you're in the middle of something, it's hard to be objective. Funny things have happened, though, and I do have to avoid confined spaces such as the underground. Recently we went to the science museum in Valencia. I was really excited to be checking it out, but I hadn't factored in the school parties, who got a little overexcited.

"I would hate to be accused of having got through life just by luck - I think you do create your own destiny. My mum and dad believe in fate. I see coincidences, but not a predestined path. If it's just about fate, then you become complacent and expect things to come your way. I like being challenged. Even when you're doing really intense, dramatic scenes that take so much out of you, it's still really fun and energising. Acting makes you feel so alive.

"Committing to such a big film project has involved sacrifices. I miss out on some of the more spontaneous moments in life. But I have a great bunch of friends and an amazing relationship with my parents, and I feel lucky to have worked with so much talent. It sounds a bit gushy, I know, but to have performed with the likes of Imelda Staunton, Gary Oldman and Michael Gambon is nothing less than magical."

During the past weeks, I've been campaigning for rightful individuals to be a part of "Behind The Blue Eyes!"

And yesterday, one 22-year old Nursing student from Quezon City, submitted an application and I was (and still am) impress by what she forwarded me.

Her name is Janina Medina. You can call her, Janine. She is a Nursing student and truly a Daniel Radcliffe fan. To know deeply about her, you can read her short info write-up.

"About Me"

I'm a third year college student, taking up Bachelor of Science in Nursing. When I'm not studying or not busy with school works, I enjoy doing the usual stuffs: surfing the internet, going to malls, listening to the radio, watching TV, enjoying the movies (not so into horror flicks), i love music!!! Anything... (except metal, and hard rock), you know, with TOO much noise. I like reading novels, like the Harry Potter series, from RL Stine's, Christopher Pike's, Nicholas Sparks' novels, anything that has suspense, or mystery stuff in it and medical books (of course) which, I try to read as much as I can..

Aside from Dan, my top idols are Justin Timberlake (I've been a fan of him and his group *Nsync, since the beginning of their career) and Vanessa Hudgens. I'm proud of her (Vanessa) because she's "pinay", just like me and she is multi-talented. I'm currently addicted to High School Musical too of the Disney Channel. My other interests which I also enjoy indulging into includes, updating and looking up on Hollywood celebrities, gossip, writing stories (during my free period), buying CDs and collecting stuffs related to Dan: videos, pictures, HP items.. name them!!!

In December of 2004, I was chosen by DanRadcliffe.com as one of their winners in their 'greatest fans hall of fame' project for ACED Magazine which was sent to Dan as a Christmas present. Again and as always, he was very overwhelmed, honored, amazed and pleased when he received it (according to a letter sent to Jenna, DR.com WebMaster). And of course, that was an achievent that I am also very proud of. To represent the Filipino fans to Daniel Radcliffe is such an honor! My greatest dream is to meet him someday "OR", just see him in person, that would be nice!! I don't think there will come a time that my dedication and obsession towards him will end. My hat is off for Dan because he is such an amazing person in so many ways!

Radcliffe, Watson, Goblet of Fire grab Genre Awards

Daniel Radcliffe who plays the lead role for "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" won Best Actor for Movies at the SyFy Genre Awards beating Nathan Fillion of "Serenity."

On the other hand, Emma Watson, who also starred at the 4th Harry Potter sequel as Hermione Granger, won Best Actress for Movies against Summer Glau, still from "Serenity".

The movie, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" also won Best Movie against "Serenity".

Emma Watson took her second trophy at SyFy Genre Awards for Best Young Actor For HPGoF against Daniel Radcliffe, also for the same movie. Radcliffe had already received 2 Best Young Actor Awards in the past, twice, for the "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban" on 2005 and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" on 2003.

The Goblet of Fire movie won against Serenity by 50 percent to 35 percent which made the Harry Potter movie and actors the biggest winner in the movies category.

Dan receives Penguin 'Best Actor' Award, Emma wins Best Actress

Dan, who is very busy with filming the 5th instalment of the Potter film---Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix---received an award from Xpress Magazine.

The Magazine (from Austria) gave the two Awards: Best Actor and Best Actress to Daniel and Emma (Watson) while they were on the set of the Warner Bros. studio in London working for the HPOotP.

On the image (right), featured the two Potter stars with the Penguin Awards within their reach. (Original text of magazine in German). Click the image for a larger version.

While meeting the staffs of Xpress, Daniel gave a statement, "How did I get the award?" which was very witty. :)

It has been 2 days now since I've tried making my videos at WVM. Thanks to Marion for the idea of where I can create such personalized videos.

On the previous post, I have embeded a Music Video about Daniel's being crazy and funny. It took me one and a half day to complete the video. And it was fun. I love the output. But now, I tried to build a slideshow on the trio: Daniel, Emma, and Rupert (well, actually it's done). Yupee! And I tribute this slideshow to the three guys who made Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ronald Weasley to life...

Bids on autographed items from Daniel Radcliffe, Jim Dale, and Ewan McGregor lead the pack in an online auction of celebrity autographed items to benefit the Luke Neuhedel Foundation, a 501c3[?] charity that helps children fighting cancer. Radcliffe’s fans are furiously bidding over a copy of “Loving Luke”, a book of essays and poems about Luke Neuhedel and his inspirational battle with cancer, which Mr. Radcliffe signed for the auction. As of press time, the highest bid on this item was $650. The “Loving Luke” signed by Jim Dale was in second place at $200, and the Ewan McGregor signed copy was in third place at $100.

Warner Bros. Pictures' " Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" has crossed the $600 million mark in international receipts and ranks fifth among all-time international releases.

It sits behind "Titanic," the all-time champ with US$1.2 billion in international grosses; "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (US$752 million); "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," the first Potter movie (US$657 million); and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," the second (US$616 million).

The third installment, "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," ranks ninth internationally with US$545 million.

Since its release in November, "Goblet" has collected cumulative grosses of US$91 million in Japan, US$84 million in the UK, US$62 million in Germany, US$55 million in France, US$26 million in Australia, US$23 million in Spain and US$21 million in Mexico, according to Sue Kroll and Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, Warner Bros. Pictures International's president of marketing and president of distribution, respectively.

Adding its domestic grosses, "Goblet" ranks eighth on the worldwide list.

Production has begun on the fifth Potter movie, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," with David Yates at the helm, for release next year.

Gary Oldman plays serious as Sirius

Harry Potter producers have confirmed Gary Oldman (on photo, left) will reprise his role as Sirius Black in The Order Of The Phoenix - despite reports to the contrary.

Oldman, who has appeared in the last two movies adapted from JK Rowling's popular children's books, has yet to be signed for a third term - even though filming for Harry Potter And The Order OF The Phoenix has already begun.

But producer David Heyman insists there is plenty of time for Oldman to sign up: "We're not shooting his part for quite a while, and as is always the case, you begin with the parts that are most pressing.

"We have every intention of having Gary Oldman play Sirius Black."

The 47-year-old is currently shooting Zodiac in Los Angeles with Se7en director David Fincher.

Son of Dork frontman and McFly collaborator James Bourne (on photo, right) has slammed Daniel Radcliffe after he claimed that they fake playing.

The Harry Potter actor caused upset recently after he claimed that McFly do not play their own instruments. The claim caused outrage in the band and its friends in Son of Dork.

"Daniel Radcliffe talks a lot of s***," the former Busted member told The Mirror. "He keeps talking about everyone else's talent but he should look at his own - he is atrocious."

And Bourne was not the only Son of Dork member to lash out at the teen wizard - bandmate Dave Williams had a few words to say about him: "He's a s*** actor and the s****est character in the whole movie."

The boy wizard Harry Potter will spin his magic once again at the film box office next year

The fifth installment in the franchise Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix commenced filming a few days ago at England’s Leavesden Studios. It is being directed by British filmmaker David Yates.

Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson reprise their roles as close-knit teen wizards Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The production also welcomes back production designer Stuart Craig, costume designer Jany Temime, creature effects supervisor Nick Dudman, special effects supervisor John Richardson and visual effects supervisor Tim Burke.

The fourth film Harry Potter And the Goblet Of Fire did well at the box office. For the first time viewers got to see the villain Lord Voldemort played by Ralph Fiennes.

In the fifth film Harry returns for his fifth year of study at Hogwarts and discovers that much of the wizarding community is in denial about the teenager’s recent encounter with the evil Lord Voldemort, preferring to turn a blind eye to the news that Voldemort has returned. Fearing that Hogwarts’ venerable Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, is lying about Voldemort’s return in order to undermine his power and take his job, the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, appoints a new defense against the Dark Arts teacher to keep watch over Dumbledore and the Hogwarts students. But Professor Dolores Umbridge’s Ministry-approved course of defensive magic leaves the young wizards woefully unprepared to defend themselves against the dark forces threatening them and the entire wizarding community. So at the prompting of his friends Hermione and Ron, Harry takes matters into his own hands. The Phoenix starts filming on 6th February

The three teenage stars of the "Harry Potter" movies are gathering for the fifth film in the wizard saga, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix." Filming begins February with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint reprising their roles as teenage wizards.

Britain's David Yates, who last year made the HBO movie "The Girl in the Cafe," will direct and "Vera Drake" star Imelda Staunton will play the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Delores Umbridge.

Other new cast members announced last week include 14-year-old newcomer Evanna Lynch as Hogwarts student Luna Lovegood; Natalia Tena, who played in "About a Boy," as Nymphadora Tonks, a young dark wizard-catcher; Helen McCrory, who appeared in "Count of Monte Cristo," as Bellatrix Lestrange, a dark wizard; and Michael Wildman, who appeared in "The Merchant of Venice," as Kingsley Shacklebolt, a dark wizard-catcher. HARRY Potter star Katie Leung is dumping her university plans to have her first big-screen kiss.

Fans will see Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the boy wizard, in a clinch with the Motherwell girl.

The 18-year-old has been signed up to return as Cho Chang for the next movie in the blockbuster series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Katie has had to shelve plans to study art at university because filming starts tomorrow. She said:

"I am now preparing myself for the next instalment and I am very much looking forward to it.

"Cho's character develops into a more interesting role.

Potter hopes to grab awards this year

Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has tipped the film Capote to win big at this year's awards ceremonies.

He also singled out The Constant Gardener as the other film he has enjoyed most this year.

"It's between those two, for me," he said.

Daniel said he was looking forward to dusting down his suit for the many award ceremonies, including the Oscars in March.

He added, unsurprisingly, that he thought Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire should win everything it is nominated for.

Children lit stars to attend Queen's Tea Party

A national ballot for youngsters wanting to attend a star-studded children's party at Buckingham Palace to mark the Queen's 80th birthday is due to open.

Harry Potter author JK Rowling and Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the magical teenage wizard in the hit films, will be among those at the event on Sunday June 25.

The Queen is hosting the tea party in the Palace gardens to celebrate Britain's favourite children's stories.

Much loved characters from both traditional and more modern books will be there such as Tracy Beaker, Paddington Bear, Mowgli, Winnie the Pooh and the Gruffalo.

All children living in the UK aged between four and 14 are invited to apply for tickets through a national ballot by logging on to the CBBC website.

Buckingham Palace is due to release further details of the party, which will feature a colourful entertainment show in the evening which will be broadcast live on the BBC.

A Palace spokeswoman said: "The Children's Party at the Palace will be a celebration of British children's literature, both traditional and modern, which we hope will encourage children to read and enjoy books.

"The day will also focus on the family and the key role that grandparents and parents, relatives and friends can play in shaping a child's love of books through the favourite stories that families pass down through generations. We hope this day will encourage children to explore new worlds through the characters and their stories."

Other events taking place this year to mark the Queen's milestone birthday include a National Service of Thanksgiving on June 15 at St Paul's Cathedral. On the same day, she will tuck into a special lunch - with the menu chosen by members of the public in a poll as part of a BBC television programme.

The Queen will celebrate her official birthday with the annual Trooping the Colour parade on June 17. She will spend her actual birthday on April 21 at Windsor Castle and the Prince of Wales will host a family dinner in her honour in the evening. Charles is said to be planning a televised address to be shown ahead of the occasion.

The Stories behind the Goblet of Fire DVD March 7 and March 20 release dates...

Despite being filmed mainly in England Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire will be released on DVD in the US two weeks before fans can get it in the UK.

Warner Bros has confirmed the DVD will be out on 20 March in the UK, but US kids will have it from 7 March.

The DVD will have special features including behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson.

Warner Bros said the difference in dates was a matter of "scheduling".

People who buy the DVD will be able to take part in the action as the makers have created three interactive challenges based on the exciting Triwizard Tournament and a fourth called To the Graveyard and Back.

Viewers will also be able to see how sections such as the underwater lake scene were made, as well as getting a sneak peek at how the Yule Ball and other scenes were filmed.

As slow as the movie industry has been lately, you would think that not one single movie made a splash last year. Luckily, for viewers and the film industry alike, that's not true. Here's a quick look at the top ten movies of 2005 and how they faired worldwide at the box office:

10. "Hitch" - "Hitch" opened on February 11 making $43 million in a weekend. This broke the record $39 million opening previously held by Adam Sandler's "50 First Dates." "Hitch," starring Will Smith, Eva Mendes and Kevin James, raked up $179 million here in the US and a total of $368 million worldwide. The movie was received very well by critics and held the highest grossing title for beginning months of 2005.

9. "Batman Begins" - "Batman Begins" opened on June 15 and brought in $48 million in its first three days. The movie starred Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman and, of course, Mrs.-Cruise-to-be, Katie Holmes. Though Katie's high profile romance with Cruise grabbed headlines, "Batman Begins" didn't suffer. It topped out with $205 million in the US and $371 million worldwide.

8. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" - Most people had their doubts when it came to the remake of this classic. However, the fabulous Johnny Depp and Tim Burton stepped up to the challenge and got something twice as sweet out of the deal. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" opened July 15 and made a solid $56 million. Most thought it fade off after the great opening, but fans had a sweet-tooth and kept coming back for more. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" made $206 million in the US and $473 million worldwide. Take that skeptics!

7. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" - The movie that sparked all of the controversy of the year, "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" opened on June 10 at $50 million. While both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were media favorites, none of their previous movies had been major blockbusters. "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" helped to boost both of their careers, earning $186 million at the US box office and $475 million worldwide.

6. "King Kong" - "Lord of the Rings" mega-man, Peter Jackson, can erase that would-be stigma of only being successful at directing one kind of film. Jackson hit gold again. But this time there were no hobbits, orcs or sexy elves; there was a big monkey. "King Kong," starring Naomi Watts, Jack Black and Adrien Brody, opened on December 14, making $50 million in its opening weekend. Though this was somewhat low compared to the "LOTR" films, the movie continued to bring in numbers and has made $205 million in the US and $500 million worldwide, so far. "Kong" is still in the top ten on the box office charts.

5. "Madagascar" - "Madagascar" is the only animated movie in the top ten. Dreamworks' "Madagascar" opened on May 27 with $47 million. Its mix of funny stars (Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett-Smith) and its catchy "I Like to Move It-Move It!" helped "Madagascar" to rake in $193 million in the US and $527 worldwide, and giving Dreamworks Studios something else to cheer about.

4. "Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" - "Chronicles of Narnia" opened on December 9, bringing in a healthy $65 million. "Narnia," starring Georgie Henley, William Moseley, Skandar Keynes, Tilda Swinton and Anna Popplewell, captivated audiences and has brought in $267 million from the US and more than $588 million worldwide. "Chronicles of Narnia" is currently fifth at the box office.

3. "War of the Worlds" - Yet another remake of an alien movie, "War of the Worlds" invaded theaters on June 29, bringing in $64 million. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning, "War of the Worlds" made $234 million in the US and $591 million worldwide, making it the number one sci-fi remake of all time.

2. "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" - George Lucas finally wrapped up the "Star Wars" series and he did it with style. "Revenge of the Sith," starring Ewan McGregor, Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman and Samuel L. Jackson, opened on May 19 and broke opening weekend records making $108 million. It went on to make $380 million in the US alone, and a world total of $848 million.

1. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" - It was clear that once again Harry Potter had the magic touch. "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" opened on November 18, taking in $102 million. "Goblet of Fire," starring Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, won the holiday showdown between "King Kong" and "Chronicles of Narnia." It added $867 million, including $284 million from the US, to its franchise total, which is now more than $3.5 billion.

Less than a decade ago, the words “fantasy novel” quite possibly evoked a mental image of an awkward, adolescent boy leaving greasy fingerprints all over the pages of a book about dungeons and dragons. In recent years, however, the genre has broken free of its confining stereotype, having earned this right, and then some.

Enjoying jumps in sales by 8.5 percent in the past five years, today the genre is treated much more seriously due to its rapid and dramatic rise in popularity. Having a conversation about fantasy novels could veer in the direction of myriad topics, from the ethics of escapism to blockbuster movies, from Freud’s thoughts on wish fulfillment to Daniel Radcliffe and pop culture.

Though fantasy novels have never exactly been unpopular, it was probably hard for their authors to imagine a time when their genre of novel would be so popular as to inspire winding moonlit lines of fans waiting to buy the newest book. That said, fantasy novels have enjoyed a long history and have existed longer than the genre thought to go hand-in-hand with them, science fiction. The earliest fantasy novel worth mentioning, in the sense that we understand it today, is Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written an astonishing 141 years ago by Lewis Carroll. Around 30 years later was Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and, at the turn of the century, Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz.

In the 20th century, fantasy novels developed a bit of a cult following and a more specialized audience. Writer Ian McFayden’s satirical yet accurate Web site titled “How to Write a Best Selling Fantasy Novel” advises a potential writer to consider the audience and makes clear the stereotype surrounding fantasy novels: “Remember that the majority of people reading your book will be unconfident males. So make your character a Loser. Aimless, shy, cowardly, guilty, ill, lazy, rural—any of these will do.”

Though this category of reader may still make up the bulk of fantasy novel aficionados, the 21st century has already seen an audience expansion, largely due to the Harry Potter phenomenon, which began in 1998 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Middle school teacher Ann Smith observed, “Prior to the Harry Potter books, it seemed to me that boys tended to like fantasy better, but now girls show as much or more interest in reading fantasy books.”

Books and series like The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, A Wrinkle in Time, The Last Unicorn, A Wizard of Earthsea, Redwall, and Eragon—which was, astonishingly, written by a 15-year-old homeschooled boy from the Midwest—have experienced immense popularity of late, probably helped by the recent Hollywood blockbusters based on them. Especially for younger kids, these movies have a positive effect: “I think that young people have wonderful imaginations that are sparked by the special effects of today’s amazing technology. Therefore, they can easily visualize the characters and plots of fantasy novels,” says Smith.

Though each novel, of course, has its own characters, message, and style, many plot elements overlap in fantasy works. McFayden’s Web site lists the main elements to include: “Create a Character, Create a Quest, Create a Motley Bunch of Companions, Create a Wise but Useless Guide, Create the Land, Create an Enemy, Make it Long, Lead up to a Cataclysmic Battle.” Though these guidelines are oversimplified, any fantasy novel you know and will likely include most of those elements.

Merriam-Webster calls fantasy “the creative imagination, unrestricted by reality.” Fantasy novels allow us to do just that: drop the restrictions and connections with reality and escape to not only another set of people and friends, but a whole other world where our worries and routine don’t exist.

On this subject, an anonymous fantasy novel enthusiast and writer on a fantasy message board writes, “When I was a kid, I wasn’t popular. It was occasionally hellish. I escaped into worlds where I could do anything I wanted. If I wanted to call a dragon and fly away on it, I could do that. If I wanted to be an elvish princess in disguise, I could do that. Now, it can be hard to admit that when you grow up, that you need to escape reality now and then, but I think the world is a scary and out-of-control place and sometimes that gets to people.”

As long as the world remains a scary and out-of-control place—and it currently shows no sign of ceasing to be so—fantasy will continue to reign in the hearts and minds of its faithful followers.

Harry Potter DVD to carry loads of fun

“Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” will be released March 7 on DVD with special features, according to Warner Bros.

The first disc will have talks with the cast, a making-of feature and interactive games.

The second disc will have extra scenes from the films, an interview with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, four more challenges, a game demo, trading cards, a Hogwarts timeline and six featurettes covering the Tri-Wizard tasks, the Yule Ball, Voldermort and Harry’s Tri-Wizard competitors.

The DVD should cost about $30.

Speaking of “Harry Potter,” there was an open audition in England recently for the role of Luna Lovegood in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

Early career

Radcliffe was born in Fulham, London, the only child of Alan Radcliffe (a literary agent) and Marcia Gresham (a casting agent, who was involved in several films for the BBC). Radcliffe's parents discouraged him from show business when, at age five, he expressed desire in acting. However, they changed their minds; in December, 1999, he made his first on-screen appearance as the title character in the BBC's televised version of the Dickens novel David Copperfield.

Career

In 2000, Radcliffe was selected to star as the wizard Harry Potter in a big-budget version of the popular book series by J.K. Rowling, after auditions involving thousands of applicants. Radcliffe's first theatrical film appearance was in 2001, a small supporting role in The Tailor of Panama. His first starring role as Harry Potter, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (released in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone), was released later that year and became a large financial success. It was in fact, at the time, the second highest grossing movie of all time.

In 2002, Radcliffe reprised his role in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (his co-star was Kenneth Branagh, who that same year directed the stage production, The Play What I Wrote, in which Radcliffe made an appearance). In 2004 and 2005, Radcliffe returned to the Potter franchise in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The films continued to produce high box office results and were considered successful worldwide.

Radcliffe is currently filming the independent Australian film, December Boys. He is slated to appear in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, currently scheduled for release in 2007.

Personal life

Radcliffe, who prefers to be called "Dan" and was taught at the esteemed Sussex House School, Knightsbridge, is currently educated at the all-boys public City of London School. He has two dogs, named Binka and Nugget.

He plays bass guitar and is a guitar-rock music fan, admiring several bands including The Beatles, The Clash, The Libertines, The Strokes, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Sex Pistols and the Pixies. He also enjoys Bloc Party, R.E.M., U2 and Stereophonics. As well as being a fan of Fulham Football Club, Daniel was a follower of the World Wrestling Entertainment league of wrestling and Formula One Racing.

Radcliffe has also been a supporter of various charities. Fans have repeatedly donated to organizations on his request, including the Demelza House Charity, in lieu of sending him birthday presents.

The teenage stars of the latest 'Harry Potter' movie will cost Warner Bros $3.6-million when they stop filming the new movie for a month to take school exams.

Daniel Radcliffe (17) and Emma Watson, soon to be 16, must sit Advanced Supplementary (AS) Levels and General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams respectively this summer, halting the progress of the fifth movie, 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' by a month.

A source said: "Not everyone is going to be paid but Warner Bros are having to factor in an extra £2-million into the budget to pay for studio hire and offices."

Radcliffe, who plays Harry in JK Rowling's blockbuster series, is studying English literature, history, religion and philosophy, while co-star Watson, better known as Hermione Granger, will sit exams for standard subjects including English, maths and science.

Indeed, who would not cry when you found out, a young down-to-earth lad would be playing the famous boy wizard Harry Potter. Inspired by the original novels of J. K. Rowling, Daniel Jacob Radcliffe turned successful, now on the title role on four Harry Potter movies (recently, the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire released 18th November 2005), and Harry Potter fans crowded the streets all over the world to have Dan signed the autographs, picture taking, or lucky, shake hands with him.
